  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon vegan Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon horseradish (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Peel and slice the onions into bite-sized petals.
  2. Set up your breading station: combine flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, and salt in one bowl; pour buttermilk in another; and place panko breadcrumbs in a third bowl.
  3. Coat each onion piece in the flour mixture, then dip in buttermilk, followed by rolling it in panko until fully covered.
  4. Heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C) in a deep fryer or large pot.
  5. Fry the coated onion petals in batches for about 2–3 minutes until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
  6. Mix together dipping sauce ingredients until well combined.
